The CAPE is historic in many respects. The history of the vessel is well documented in both military service, and with the present owner in private ownership for the past 21 years. Hauled Out, surveyed and bottom painted June 2017. The vessel is predominantly original in the configuration and propulsion. The Navy spent money overhauling the main engines, and numerous refurbishments just prior to decommissioning. After sitting idle for a few years, this owner has updated some of the comforts and utility features, but without changing the character of the ship. CAPE has recently been visited and inspected by her former Navy Captain, and many of her crew. This was both in Olympia, and for a second reunion where CAPE was run to Long Beach California to participate in a second crew reunion. The perfect vessel for the person that always wanted a minesweeper, or it could be an attractive draw for operations for eco-tours, kayak or diving expeditions. Used under contract for research by the Johns Hopkins University in the '70's shortly after her first decommissioning by the navy, she was put back into service by the navy in December of 1984. Excerpts from July 2014 Survey
"Materials: Silicone Bronze screw fastened double planked V.G Douglas Fir wood hull with longitudinal framing system of 4~3/4" X 5" steam bent and sawn Oak Frames on 15" centers the entire length of the vessel. Visual inspection and percussion testing found the hull and underbody in very good condition. No signs of soft, deteriorating, loose, uneven or proud planks were evident and all butt seams were smooth and fair.
Keel: A bronze cutwater and full bronze stern post, rudder post and rudder were found in excellent - stable condition with little or no signs of deterioration. A new worm shoe was installed in 2009 and still looks new. No signs of damage, abrasion, hogging or checking were evident.
Hull scantlings considered normal for vessel's original intended service and excessive for its role as a pleasure craft today."
Nobody builds with a money is no object attitude like the government.

"MACHINERY: The engine room was found neat and orderly. It was clean and all valving and plumbing was well labeled and color coded. Four, Non magnetic Detroit Diesel 71 series, 6-cylinder air starting, fresh water cooled of 225 h.p. each (900 h.p. total) diesel engines driving a single bronze 70" dia. Screw through one GM transfer reverse/ reduction gear manufactured by Faulk Enterprises.
The current owner reports that the Navy, when re-commissioning the vessel in 1984, removed the main engines, and replaced them with the overhauled iron block "H" series quad pack . The forward shop area, converted to a laboratory when in charter for research had originally motors used for Minesweeping and the degaussing equipment to repel the magnetic field while working.
CONTROLS: Mathers single lever type for throttle and reverse gear, two control stations. One in the wheelhouse and one in the engine room. controls.
ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM: Dry type with steel and flexible steel piping, and a steel muffler. All piping and mufflers are lagged in the engine room and fully insulated in all exposed areas and exits through a single stack on the cabin top.
DRIVE TRAIN: Bronze 4 ~ 1/2" dia. Shaft supported by oil lubricated pillow blocks with a (4) bolt compression type packing. Water lubricated rubber sleeve (cutlass) bearing turning a 70" dia. RH 5- bladed Bronze propeller. The propeller was clean and free of any marine growth, nicks, dings, or damage."
This vessel is maintained to cruise, and has cruised the coast with this owner, and is ready to go again. The engines were reported to have been rebuilt by the Navy just prior to decommissioning and have approximately 2500 hours since. Cruising 10 knots, with all four 6-71 main engines ,and the 75 watt 4-71 generator running, consumption is approximately 20 gallons per hour.

"STEERING SYSTEM: Original cable and rod type wheel steering with one control station located in the wheelhouse. All cables, pulleys and rods appeared in good stable condition. The quadrant was found clean and good.- serviceable condition.
SHIPS SERVICE GENERATORS: One A.C. Delco, 75 KW, 480 Volt 3 Phase AC generator powered by one Non Magnetic Detroit Diesel, 71 series, 4- cylinder, electric starting, fresh water cooled diesel engine.
EMERGENCY GENERATOR: One, International Electric, 75 KW, 480 Volt 3 phase AC generator powered by one Non Magnetic Detroit Diesel, 71 series, 4- cylinder, electric starting, fresh water cooled diesel engine.
HOUSE GENERATOR: One, 21 KW 480 Volt 3 Phase AC generator powered by one ISUZU 4 cylinder, electric starting, fresh water cooled diesel engine.
FUEL SYSTEM: Four independent bronze tanks totaling 6800 gallons with shut-off valves at tanks, bronze piping, tank manifold, and filters at the engine, with screened vents on the tanks, and a fuel transfer pump and manifold system.
POTABLE WATER SYSTEM: Two independent bronze tanks of 1200 gallons each with shut-off valves at tanks, bronze and plastic piping, manifold, fittings, one 75 gallon electric water heater, and two electric powered pressure units complete with pump, surge tank, and water filtration system. A 20 gallon per hour Sea Recovery Aqua Whisper water maker is installed forward starboard of the mascot room. (Mothballed at present)
AIR SYSTEM: Two, 2-cylinder electric powered compressor units with automatic start/stop switches, two receiver tanks, bronze piping, valves, and fittings. The compressors are clean and well labeled. Both electric motors have been replaced within the past 200 hours of use.
MARINE SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM: One 400 gallon holding tank with plumbing to deck pump-out fitting or electric driven discharge pump overboard through macerator. Two electric incinolet waste incineration toilets are installed on main deck. One in the day head, and one ion the master cabin.
Furuno RDP081 Radar, Raytheon R-20 Radar, Furuno GP 37 GPS, Echo Tec digital depth sounder, Micro Logic auto-pilot, Sperry *' Compass, 18' Searchlight, Davis Weather Wizard anemometer/ wind speed / direction/ direction indicator. ICOM VHF radio, STANDARD VHF radio, S.P Multiple station telephone type intercom system. PC computer and display.
3/4" dia. stainless steel stun link chain of 450' in length. Flaked neatly in the chain locker. Bitter end made fast by steel plate lagged to the stem. A 250 lb. Danforth style anchor is raised by a cat's paw drum on vertical foredeck windlass through the starboard side hawser.
"The current market for vessel of this type is generally value based on condition, unique design, functionality and historical significance. Since the subject vessel is being restored and upgraded-p plus the desirability for quality historical wood yachts- the marketability for this specific vessel during the foreseeable future is deemed to be fair to good. The present owner has done an excellent job of reviving the M/V Cape and continues to properly maintain and upgrade the vessel. It is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship used in the local ship yards to build such vessels and a great preservation of a by gone era. No major additions or alterations have been done which would hamper the vessel to be easily refitted to original as a museum show piece."
