The Atlantic Ketch was designed by Walter Rayner and this yacht was built in 1965 in Southend-on-Sea. Rayner, an ex-pat Australian working in Poole, described his design as a “powerful ketch... that can easily be sailed by a man and his wife on long cruises...”
In his well-known book The Proper Yacht, Arthur Beiser describes the Atlantic Ketch as ”an able cruiser....radiating sturdy competence.”
The Atlantic ketch Thames Tonnage of 17TM immediately tells you this is a big boat for her dimensions. At over 9 tons displacement she is a comfortable and dry boatthat will stand up to her canvas and yet can still sailed by 2, and her relatively shoal draft opens access to canals and inland water-ways.
The designer achieved his aim to produce a manageable yacht with good cruising performance under sail and a powerful engine to get you back home when the wind and tide turns against you.
The big, deep and sheltered centre cock-pit makes a practical living space and allows a decent aft cabin, a saloon cabin and a second sleeping cabin forward thus suiting a family or a couple with guests who can have their own private sleeping quarters – and all in a very manageable and economic 38’.
This yacht was bought by the present owner in 2002, since then she has cruised in Holland, France and UK and has been a home afloat for several years. 2012 survey available.

Decks and cockpit
Yacht laid teak deck screwed and glued over a marine plywood sub deck.
A high varnished mahogany toe rail all round with varnished capping rail and rubbing strake.

Centre cockpit configuration with a deep and very sheltered cockpit. Full cockpit tent attaches to the solid canopy which is made of sheathed marine plywood with aluminium framed windows. When the tent is erected the boat is covered from stem to stern giving a large amount of sheltered space, ideal for live aboard or long distance cruising.
Twin helm positions as is common in these boats. The main helm is forward to starboard with the engine controls and a seat, sheltered by the solid canopy and a perfect place to hide from the elements. The second is aft to port and is an ideal place to sit out in the sun when the cockpit tent is off. This sort of versatility is exactly why the Atlantic ketch was so popular, a boat for all occasions.
Mahogany coamings, now painted gloss white for ease of maintenance, with 6 alloy framed windows each side, half of which are opening.
Sheathed plywood coachroof deck with varnished hand rails, forehatch and capping rail.
Bermudan ketch rig on varnished wooden spars mounted in tabernacles on the coachroof decks.
The main mast was new in 2010 from Collars. Both masts have single spreaders with twin lower shrouds and a single cap shroud. No running backstays for ease of handling. Stainless steel standing rigging, new in 2009, to stainless rigging screws and internal stainless chain plates.
