SWAN is a 1989 Block Island 40.  Keel / Centerboard cruising yacht designed by Bill Tripp and built by Migrator Yachts, Wareham, MA.  She draws 4'2 with the board up and 8'10 with the board down.

Construction
Hull is an overbuild of hand layup construction.  The materials used are ISO gelcoat, vinyl ester and general purpose resin and a combination of 1 1/2 oz mat, 18 oz & 24 oz bi-ax fiberglass.  The hand laid one-piece hull is built with a 6" hull flange.  There is extra laminate in all areas of stress concentration. The centerboard trunk is laminated within the hull structure.  The center line, ballast, and sump areas are in excess of one inch solid glass.  Interior of hull is gel-coated.  A contrasting color boot-top is molded in the hull.

Deck - a one piece hand laminated structure consisting of 1 1/2 oz mat, 18 oz biaxial and 24 ounce directional fiberglass cored with 3/4" end grain balsa.  The deck is permanently bonded to the hull with 3M 5200 on the 6" flange and bolted every 6 " with 1/4" x 20 stainless steel bolts.  Stanchion bases and genoa tracks fasten through the deck and hull flange. Gel coat is molded into the non-skid areas.

Rudder - molded fiberglass cored with high density closed cell polyurethane foam.  The rudder stock is 1 1/2 " stainless steel and fully webbed inside the rudder.  Rudder attachment to the hull is by a cast bronze rudder shoe, a stuffing box at the hull and a bearing at the cockpit sole.

Centerboard - molded fiberglas NACA foil of mat, bi- axial and uni-directional glass.  The centerboard pin is 1 1/2 stainless steel.  Centerboard pennant leads aft to self tailing winch on cabin top at cockpit.


Accomodation

General: vertical surfaces are primarily teak marine plywood trimmed with solid teak, off-white laminate in the head. The cabin sole is solid teak.  Louvered locker doors.  Passage doors are paneled.  The headliner is foam backed vinyl and is removable.  

Cushions renewed in Ultrasuede in the past few years.

Forward Cabin = Berths port and starboard are 6'8" with 5" foam cushions.  V berth filler, ash ceilings, bureau with two drawers, 2 lockers and hanging locker , 2 passage doors to main cabin and head, storage under v-berth, book & storage shelves,  2 bulkhead lamps, one overhead light.

Head - molded shower pan with teak grates.  Vanity with stainless steel sink with shower head faucet, hamper, toiletry locker with sliding mirror door.  towel storage cabinet.  Marine toilet with overboard discharge, holding tank with Y valve, towel rack, grab rail, 3 overhead lights. 

Main Cabin - overhead grab rails, 5" foam cushions with top grade fabric, ash hull batten strips, 5 bulkhead & 1 overhead light.  Port side u shaped dinette with 6 persons seating, bookshelves and lockers.  2 drawers and storage under cushions and behind backrests.  Adjustable table on a gas filled pedestal, converting dinette to a double berth 6'4" long.  Storage under settee with trap doors and behind backrests.  Bureau with 2 drawers and 2 storage lockers, hanging locker. 

Galley - U shaped with 7.5 cu ft ice box, fully insulated with 2 hinged lids, bottom access hatch and vinyl coated wire racks.  FORCE 10 gimbled stainless steel propane stove with oven and safety bar.  2 deep stainless steel sinks, generous counter space, ample food and dish storage, trash basket, 2 utensil drawers.3 overhead lights, 2 10 lb aluminum propane tanks housed in lazarette w/ electric & manual shutoff.

2 opening hatches overhead, 1 in fwd cabin & one in main cabin.  2 hatches on deck for access to anchor/rope locker forward and propane locker aft.  4 cockpit seat hatches, companionway hatch and sea hood of molded fiberglass with locking hasps.

Handrails - 4 sets of teak handrails on cabin house
Mainsheet System - Lewmar traveler with Harken Hexaratchet System
Vang Preventer - deck padeyes, port & starboard, boom bale & tackle
Deck Prisms 3 - 1 in v berth - 2 in main cabin

Machinery

Engine: Yanmar 4JHE 51 HP fresh water cooled, 80 amp alternator, flexible engine mounts, manual gearbox with 2.17:1 ration, Morse control cables
Shaft -Bronze 1 1/4" w/ water injected stuffing box, cutless bearing, zinc anode on shaft, 2 blade bronze propeller
Cooling - heat exchanger, sea water basket strainer positive anti - siphon bypass w/ separate discharge
Instruments - deluxe recessed panel containing tachometer, hour meter, oil & temperature gauges, Alarm buzzer for high temperature & low oil pressure, alarm light for oil, water and alternator.
Drip pan - a drip pan is under entire engine installation
Insulation - sound down lined engine box
Accessibility - complete access to engine for general maintenance or removal is easily accomplished without disruption of furniture or engine equipment.
Fuel - 47 gallons in fiberglass tank, fuel gauge, spare pickup for optional diesel cabin heater, deck fill, vented.  primary filter is a Racor fuel/water separator w/ priming pump,  blower

Electrical:

House Batteries - 2 6 volt in series 12v, 224 amp
Starting battery - 1 12 v 140 amp, 18 circuit brakers w/ amp & volt meters, circuit switches
Panel - 12 volt and 110 volt custom, back lit panel.  There are 20, 12 and 4 110 volt circuit breakers, lighted switch indicators and voltage and amp meters
Wiring - color coded by ABYC standards.
Interior Lighting - 6 spunbrass cabin reading lamps, 7 overhead glass lens lights, 1 navigation station lamp.
Exterior Lighting - Navigation lights comply with Coast Guard Standards.  Bi-color light combination red/green at bow pulpit, stern light on stern rail, steaming light on mast.  Combination anchor tricolor and strobe at masthead.  Foredeck light on mainmast, flood light on mizzen mast.  compass light.

Plumbing - 

Tankage - Fresh water 126 gallons total.  2 40 gallon stainless steel tanks amidships, port and starboard below sole, 40 gallon rigid polyethylene reserve tank forward under v berth.  6 gallons in hot water tank.  
Water Heater - 6 gallons stainless steel w 110 volt and engine heat exchanger
Pressure system - hot and cold pressure water is provided to galley and head by a 12 volt diaphragm pump
Shower - shower in head with 12 volt electric sump pump
Pumps - Manual backup water pump in galley, cockpit mounted 26 gpm diaphram bilge pump.  Electric bilge pump.
Seacocks - non-corrosive marelon, through bolted and double clamped below waterline

Spars and rigging

Main mast - keel stepped, clear anodized, tapered, airfoil spreaders, internal halyards : 1 main, 2 jib halyards and topping lift.  A stopper is provided for 2nd jib halyard.  All wires in mast are secured yet removable.  Standing rigging 1x19 5/16 stainless steel wire.   Windex vane at masthead.  Halyard and reefing winches are mastmounted
Main Boom  - clear anodized aluminum with internal out haul, 2 reefing points and topping lift with snap shackle, which can double as a spare main halyard.
Mizzen mast - deck stepped.  clear anodized, tapered oval section, airfoil spreaders, internal halyards.  Exits are provided for staysail halyard.  One halyard winch.  Standing rigging is 1x19 7/32 stainless steel wire.  
Mizzen Boom - clear annodized aluminum with internal out haul, topping lift, and slab reef.
