The Oyster 62 is without doubt one of the finest cruising yachts ever designed. Elegant, fast, responsive and comfortable she has all the attributes desired by the discerning cruising yachtsman.


Easily capable of 200 miles a day in supreme comfort, the Oyster 62 also has a competitive pedigree to match her beautifully drawn lines, with many successes in ocean races and regattas. For example, an Oyster 62 won her class in the ARC and was first to finish in all cruising classes with 178 yachts trailing in her wake. She averaged 10 knots over 1900 miles and then subsequently won all five races in Cruising Class 1 at Antigua race week.


Whilst undoubtedly fast, this Humphreys designed yacht is also easy to sail and can claim to have one of the safest and most family friendly cockpits in her class. Oyster 62’s have safely circumnavigated with young families on board and have even sailed to the Arctic reaching 80 degrees north.

A Rob Humphreys design that replaced the 61, the 62 is a bigger yacht all round, with more volume, a longer waterline and taller rig. The biggest change, though, came on deck, with the introduction of a split cockpit, aft the working area, with twin wheels, and forward one of the safest, family-friendly cockpits in a yacht of this size.


The 62 is available with either a four or a five cabin layouts, with up to three head/shower compartments, and offers accommodation and features that compare favourably with many much larger yachts. 


Performance under sail is excellent with 200 mile days in full cruising trim possible. The 62 has had easy class wins in the ARC, also getting cruising line honours and being the first to finish in all cruising classes with 178 yachts astern. In Antigua Sailing Week a 62 won all five races in Cruising Class 1.An accomplished circumnavigator, the 62 Quest was sailed around the world with a very young family and without crew. America’s Cup and Fastnet winner Gary Jobson sailed a 62 to the Arctic, reaching 80 degrees north.

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • Hull fabrication specifies hand lay-up in solid (non-cored) GRP, using fiberglass predominantly, though reinforced with Kevlar in critical areas, especially below the waterline.
  • Hull rigidity is provided by means of conventional fore-and-aft stringers both above and below the waterline, with structural floors down low to accept rigging and keel loads and to keep the shell torsionally stable.
  • Isophthalic resin is used for its enhanced resistance to water permeation.
  • The deck incorporates a balsa core for added rigidity, weight savings and insulation.
  • Where load bearing occurs, the balsa is replaced with marine-grade plywood; further, all load-bearing fittings fasten across aluminum backing plates.
  • The hull-to-deck detail consists of an inward flange in the topsides to which the deck element is bonded after being set down on a GRP resin and chopped mat mix.
