These vessels were designed for coastal racing and were quite successful. They have been considered to be "bullet proof" with their strong, heavy construction. They have met their design purpose well. "Y Knot" would be considered a good example of a Choate 48.

Y KNOT is a classic offshore racing sloop design by Doug Peterson. The hull is well constructed and remains structurally sound. The spars and rigging are sturdy and made of quality materials and the sail inventory is enough for a variety of weather conditions. The interior is well laid out and has room to move about. There is a large amount of safety gear on board suitable for ocean voyaging.

EXTERIOR

The operations center is at the pedestal in the cockpit in the aft section of the vessel. There is adequate sailing paraphernalia in the adjacent area. This is a large, open cockpit, designed for racing. There are decks on the port and starboard sides of the cockpit and cabin house leading forward for sail handling, anchoring and other uses. There is a stainless steel bow pulpit and a stainless steel stern pulpit. The aluminum mast is keel-stepped and supported with rod standing rigging. There is yacht braid running rigging.

Accommodations

Entering the main cabin from the forward section of the cockpit and down a stairway, the engine box is located directly beneath the companionway. On both the port and starboard sides of the companionway ladder, aft, are quarter berths. They open up into one area, with an enclosed marine toilet. I have called this one (1) cabin; however, each quarter berth could be considered a cabin in itself. This area is accessed down the starboard side, between the companionway and the chart table. The U-shaped galley is located on the port side of the companionway ladder.

Continuing forward into the main cabin, there are pilot berths outboard and up, on both the port and starboard sides, as well as a settee that can also be used as a berth. All four of these berths have lee cloths to prevent you from falling out when the vessel is heeled over. Continuing forward, on the port side is an enclosed marine toilet. Forward of this area, into the forepeak, is dedicated to sail storage. Throughout the vessel there are various lockers, cupboards, drawers and storage areas.
