Wizard is a Nathaniel Herreshoff designed Coquina centerboard cat-yawl. Nat Herreshoff designed the original Coquina for his own personal use and sailed it year round in Bristol, often by himself, until she was destroyed in a hurricane in 1938. It was the first boat the Nat Herreshoff’s son L. F. Herreshoff remembered sailing in at the age of five, and its influence seems evident in many of his later pocket cruising yawl designs.
Coquinas are beautiful in their simplicity and versatility. Though designed primarily as a sailboat, they row beautifully and tow astern quite well for a 17’ boat. Wizard can be rigged and sailed by one but can also easily accommodate 3 or 4 adults. She has no conventional tiller and is controlled by a line that runs around the entire boat under the rail. This is particularly handy solo sailing as she can be steered from anywhere onboard and you’re free to move around the boat to get comfortable or redistribute your weight.
This particular example has beautiful build details, Herreshoff pattern bronze hardware from J.M. Reineck, and, true to the original design, a brilliant spring-loaded mast step that aids singlehanded rigging and sailing. She comes with Center Harbor Sails, float bags, a pair of rowing sweeps, a bronze Herreshoff pattern anchor, a like new canvas mooring/trailer cover and a single axle trailer.
Wizard is a glued lapstrake plywood boat, built to plans distributed by Hylan and Brown Boatworks, who modified Nat Herreshoff’s original design slightly to suit the modern construction method. Unlike a traditionally built lapstrake boat, these glued plywood boats can live happily out of the water on a trailer and be launched and sailed in a matter of minutes. The updated construction method only adds to the versatility of Capt. Nat’s 120 year old daysailer/pocket cruiser design and we’re sure he would approve.
