Discovery 50 Catamaran - 2010 - £675,000 (Ex VAT)
KIWI SPIRIT is the only used Discovery 50 Catamaran for sale worldwide.
Anyone who wants one either must commission a new build Bluewater 50 Cat which would cost in excess of GBP£1.15m to match the equipment specification of this Discovery 50 or make a realistic offer for Kiwi Spirit – The Owner has reduced the price to GBP750k and is open to offers.
Kiwi Spirit represents a significant saving on buying new and is available for immediate delivery avoiding the 12 month lead time for a new build.
She has just been lifted out of the water for underwater inspection and has had the copper coat antifouling refreshed. The engines have been fully serviced and on a preventative maintenance basis the saildrive diaphragms have been replaced, and at the same time the propeller seals and bearings have been replaced. She also had a new Sprayhood and Bimini cover this year.
KIWI SPIRIT is set up for short-handed world cruising with effortless handling, in style and with considerable comfort. Sail handling is facilitated with twin furling head sails, self-tacking jib and hydraulic in-mast-furling along with electric winches. All the re-fitting and upgrades have been done and most importantly she is “fully sorted”. The high specification speaks for itself.
In short, she is in turn-key condition, completely ready to go, and in first class order throughout with a very full cruising inventory – she could be in the Med within a month!

Sleek in appearance, responsive to handle and fast to sail, the Discovery 50 Catamaran delivers the same exceptional construction and ocean cruising capabilities as her monohull sister yachts.
Dixon Yacht Designs are famous the world over; their design for this stunning yacht has created a spacious home afloat, providing world-class cruising on the level.
A raft of prestigious awards confirms the international acclaim that has greeted the 50 Catamaran as an outstanding new additional to the Discovery fleet.
Having completed a 5-year circumnavigation in a 65ft monohull, I reached the conclusion that the ideal vessel for liveboard long distance cruising has to be a catamaran.
One spends a lot of time at anchor so stability, good visibility and an inside-outside flow are all desirable characteristics. A good dinghy is essential – preferably a RIB. A cat provides an excellent platform for a good RIB kept on davits making for quick and easy dinghy drop and retrieval. The transom steps on a catamaran provide ease of boarding or swimming. All essential attributes for live aboard cruising.
Before purchasing Discovery Magic and transforming her into KIWI SPIRIT, I looked at and tried all the well-known production Catamarans in the size range 45ft to 55ft (and some lesser known designs). All were found lacking in one respect or another - until we came across the Discovery 50. By Catamaran standards KIWI SPIRIT has to be one of the best looking cats afloat. She is much admired wherever we go. The design, fit-out and build quality put her in a different league to all others that we looked at.
By any standards, with all the upgrades and improvements that I have since carried out she would be hard to beat and needs to be viewed to be fully appreciated.
Ease of handling by a retired husband and wife combination was an important consideration. Sail handling is a doddle with twin furling headsails, self-tacking jib and in mast-furling along with electric winches.
Good off-wind performance is achieved by an A3, asymmetrical reaching spinnaker, or a Parasail downwind spinnaker (Wow, does it work! Who says cats don’t sail fast downwind?) or a self-furling storable Code Zero.
Upwind performance is the Achilles heel of most Catamarans but thanks to a narrow sheeting angle and a large overlapping Genoa, KIWI SPIRIT will go to windward like a monohull, at a sailing angle of just 35 degree apparent! This sets her apart from the majority of cruising catamarans.
Reliable engines and a good range under power are also important attributes for a long distance cruising yacht. With her twin 75Hp Yanmar engines there is worldwide service support and with her optional long range fuel tanks, KIWI SPIRIT has a range of around 1,750nm under power.
Put simply, this Discovery 50 Cat redefines luxury live-aboard short-handed long distance cruising!
