Specifications
SECTION 1 - HULL AND DECK CONSTRUCTION
GENERAL
Hull and deck shall be constructed to the highest standard for yacht construction. All materials used shall be as specified in the construction plans. Material type and dimensions shall not deviate from the plans unless approved by the architect and the owner. The hull will be cold molded using WEST system epoxies. All hull, keelson, stem, transom, frames, floors and stringer surfaces will be coated with WEST epoxy. All other surfaces will be primed and painted or varnished. No bare wood shall be left, except for bare teak surfaces.
WOOD
All wood used shall be sound, clear and free of knots, shakes, checks and sap. It shall be air seasoned or kiln dried to have a moisture content of 12% or less.
Plywood shall be as specified on the construction plans-in general marine grade plywoods shall be Douglas fir or mahogany. Douglas fir MDO plywood may be used for interior bulkheads. Some specialty core plywoods such as Tri-Cell honeycomb may be used, as specified in the construction plans.
CONSTRUCTION
1.1 Hull Skin: The hull construction shall be as follows: the first layer will be 7/8” Alaskan Yellow Cedar, strip planked at 0 degrees and edge glued with WEST epoxy. The strips shall have a tongue and groove edge, and will be glued and bronze screw fastened to bulkheads, frames, and stringers. After fairing, the hull will be sheathed with 1208 E glass, set in WEST epoxy.
1.2 Keelson and stem: The keelson and stem shall be laminated vertical grain D. Fir or Sippo mahogany, according to the plans. The keelson shall incorporate a layer of meranti plywood to resist splitting. A chafe strip will be applied to the exterior of the hull, along the centerline. This strip shall be ¾” brass half-oval molding along the curve of the stem, below the waterline and back 6’.
1.3 Floors and Frames: The floors shall be constructed of D. fir or Sippo mahogany and glued and bolted according to plans. All floors will be limbered to provide clear drainage. Frames will not extend above the cockpit sole. Inner planking will be glued and screwed to the frames.
1.4 Sheer clamp: The sheer clamp will be scarfed to length and laminated to thickness using Douglas Fir or Sippo Mahogany
1.5 Transom: The transom will be laminated of Okoume plywood to the appropriate radius, with margin pieces to provide sufficient gluing surface for the planking. The outer layer will be varnished Sippo Mahogany. The center of the transom will be cut away above the cockpit sole to create an opening for an outboard well.
1.6 Bulkheads: Bulkheads will be marine plywood. Bulkheads will have margin pieces glued to them to accept screw fastenings through the planking and into the margin.
1.7 Stringers: two pairs of stringers will provide the primary structure for the bottom and the cockpit sole. They will be constructed of Douglas fir and marine plywood, and will extend from the bottom to the cockpit sole, with appropriate lightening/ventilation holes.
1.8 Spray Rail: A pair of spray rails will be installed on the topsides of the boat. These will be made of mahogany, sheathed in fiberglass and epoxy. They will be wedge-shaped in section, with the lower surface horizontal and the outer surface vertical.
1.9 Cockpit Sole: the cockpit sole will consist of ½” marine plywood sub sole, with a finish sole of 3/8” teak planks with rubber caulking. The finish sole will be bordered by a wider margin plank. Bronze deck plates will provide access to all fuel tank fittings and cleanouts. A watertight, removable deck plate shall provide access to the bilge pump.
1.10 Deck: Subdeck of 6mm okoume plywood, glued and screwed to the deck framing. finish deck of 3/8” thick teak, glued to subdeck. Planking will be 1-3/4” wide, with 3/16” seams of TDS silicone rubber between planks. Margin pieces around cockpit coaming, and covering boards around sheer, of 3/8” thick teak, glued to subdeck.
1.11 Deck Frame: The deck frame will be laminated Alaskan Yelolw cedar and painted.
1.12 Deck blocking: Blocking will be installed under the deck as indicated on the construction plan for deck hardware and high load areas. It will be painted.
1.13 Toe Rail: A varnished Sippo Mahogany toe rail will be glued and screwed to the deck. Height will vary as per the drawings, and the toe rails will be tapered. Custom bow chocks will be cast and installed.
1.14 Coaming: a low coaming will be fitted around the sides of the cockpit. It will be shaped of Sippo Mahogany, and varnished.
1.15 Dashboard: A custom dash will provide a mounting location for the controls and electronics. The dashboard and upper shelf will be finished in Sippo Mahogany, and varnished.
1.16 Seats: Two back to back seats at the forward end of the cockpit, and one bench seat across the stern. They will enclose lockers beneath the seat tops. They are constructed of ½” marine plywood with Sippo Mahogany varnished trim.
1.17 Rub rails: a bare teak rub rail will be provided at the sheer. In addition, teak rub rails will be provided low on each quarter, to guard against striking these areas on floats and docks. They will wrap around the stern quarters to form a boarding step. These will be protected by brass half-oval.
1.18 Table: a socket will be installed in the cockpit sole forward of the aft bench seat, to allow the cockpit table of Varnished Sippo to be installed.
SECTION 2 - DECK HARDWARE
GENERAL
The deck hardware will be of polished stainless steel and chrome-plated bronze to achieve an integrated appearance. The hardware layout will be geared toward creating a clean, simple boat, with little clutter.
3.1 Bow Chocks: A pair of custom bow chocks will be cast of bronze and chrome-plated. They will be notched into the toe rail, and secured to the deck and the stemhead.
3.2 Mooring cleat: A 8” Herreshoff cleat from Spartan Marine (#S3110) will be securely bolted to the foredeck on centerline.
3.3 Dodger: TBD The dodger shall be designed to allow quick and easy dropping in fine weather. Fasteners and hardware shall be minimal.
3.4 Spring line cleats and fairleads- A pair of 6” Spartan Herreshoff cleats (#S3108) mounted amidships.
3.5 Stern cleats and fairleads: identical to spring line cleats.
3.6 GPS antenna: A flush-mount GPS antenna, compatible with the brand of chart plotter selected, will be mounted under deck.
3.7 Navigation lights: Bow lights will be Livorsi red and green, set into the topsides about three feet aft of the bow each side. The all around light will be Perko Fig. 371, mounted on a pole in the stern deck.
SECTION 3 - MACHINERY
4.1 Main Engine: The main engine is a Yamaha F150 4 stroke outboard or owner's choice
4.2 Engine Panel: The panel will be stock from Yamaha
4.3 Batteries: There will be one Group 27 AGM battery, located in a box under the helm seat.
4.4 Charging system: The 35 amp engine alternator will charge the starting battery.
4.5 Engine control: Forward/reverse and throttle adjustment is by a side mount Comand Link Plus lever control mounted on the coaming beside the steering wheel.
4.6 Fuel tanks: A single fuel tank will be fitted, fabricated of fiberglass. Fuel fill will be in the cockpit sole. Supply, on/off valve, and vent fittings will be installed in a reinforced area of the top of the tanks. Cleanouts will be provided at the low point of the tanks, accessed through bronze deck plates in the cockpit sole. Electric sending units will be installed in the tanks to display on MFD
4.7 Fuel Filter: A Racor gas fuel filter will be installed under the aft seat
4.8 Bilge Pumps: There will be 1 electric bilge pumps, Rule 1500 with automatic float switch that discharge through the boot top via vented loops located under the side decks. A 3 position switch with circuit breaker will be in the electrical panel for off, manual and automatic operation.
4.9 Steering System: The boat will be steered with a manual hydraulic system, provided by SeaStar HC5358-3 cylinder and HH5261-3 helm unit. A Shmitt Evo 13.5” wheel will be provided, with a truckers knob.
4.10 Seacocks: All seacocks shall be Forespar Marelon seacocks. All fittings below the waterline shall have seacocks, and hose connections will be double clamped.
SECTION 4 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS
GENERAL
The electrical system will be a 12 volt DC 2 wire grounded system. The entire system will meet ABYC standards. All wires will be properly sized for load and run requirements, and will be multi-strand tinned wire. A detailed wiring diagram will be provided showing wire size, breaker size and an identification number. Every wire will be labeled at both ends with the corresponding number as shown on the drawing. All bulbs will be conventional marine light bulbs.
5.1 Alternator: The batteries will be charged by the stock 35 amp engine alternator.
5.2 Batteries: The battery is a Group 27 Dual Purpose AGM battery.
5.3 Wiring: Stranded, tinned wire shall be used. The wire shall be adequately supported and protected against chafe. The builder shall make it a priority to keep all wires and particularly, connections, located in as dry an area as possible. The bilges should be avoided, except for bilge pump wires. The panel wiring shall be a harness type with leads brought to terminal strips and buss bars behind and separate from the panel. The panel itself shall be hinged for good access. All crimp connections shall be made with the proper crimping tool for the type of connector, and crimps will also be the heat shrink type.
5.4 Electrical Panel: The panel shall be a Bass panel or equivalent. It shall include a master disconnect breaker, backlit circuit breakers, and a volt meter to read the condition of the battery bank. The panel shall also include a 3 position circuit breaker switch wired directly to the battery side of the house on/off switch for the bilge pump. Positions are manual/off/automatic. Location TBD.
5.5 Navigation Lights: Bow lights will be Livorsi red and green, set on bosses in the top sides about three feet aft of the bow each side. The all-around light will be Perko Fig. 371, mounted on a post on the aft deck.
5.6 Electronic Equipment: A 7” Simrad NSS7 evo2 color Chartplotter and sensor will be provided. A Standard Horizon DS150 depth sounder will be provided, with DST52A long stem bronze transducer.
SECTION 5 - OUTFIT
6.1 Manuals and schematics: The builder shall provide the owner with all equipment manuals as well as schematics for the electrical system, freshwater plumbing, sanitation system, seacock locations and fuel system. This paperwork shall be contained in a loose-leaf binder.
6.2 Fire extinguishers: one Kidde Compact Mariner 2.75lb
6.3 Canvas work: TBD
6.4 Fuel: the boat will be delivered with full tank of gas.
SECTION 6 - FINISHES
GENERAL
All materials to be the best quality and used according to manufacturer’s instructions. All colors shall be selected by the owner. Finish quality throughout shall be to the highest yacht standards. All paints and varnishes will be sanded between coats, and special care shall be taken to keep dust and debris to a minimum.
Particular care shall be taken to maintain a very fair hull surface, both above and below the waterline.
EPOXY COATING
The entire exterior of the hull, including any deadwood shall be coated with WEST epoxy. This does not include any surfaces which will be varnished.
All surfaces which will be painted on deck (the deck, console, etc.) will be sheathed with fiberglass and epoxy coated prior to painting.
The entire interior surface of the hull shall be WEST epoxy coated. This includes all the planking, sheer clamp, stem and keelson, floors and stringers.
PAINTED FINISHES
7.1 The interior of the hull surface beneath the cockpit sole, including the bilges, floors and stringers shall be finished with epoxy coating.
7.2 All bulkheads shall be finished with a single part paint. 4 coats minimum.
7.3 The underside of the deck shall be finished with a single part paint, prior to laying it down on the deck frame. Where the deck is glued and screwed to the deck frame the deck shall be carefully masked off to ensure maximum adhesion.
7.4 All shelves and insides of cabinets and lockers shall be painted with a single part paint.
7.5 Cockpit: the interior hull planking above the cockpit sole will be coated with single part paint.
7.6 Topsides and Boottop: The hull will be painted with single part paint in the owner’s choice of color.
7.7 Bottom: The bottom will be painted with an ablative anti-fouling bottom paint.
7.8 Cockpit sole: The cockpit sole will be teak, and will have no finish. It will be carefully sanded and cleaned just before launch.
7.9 Exterior Brightwork: All exterior bright work shall receive a minimum of 7 coats of single part Marine varnish, Epifanes or equivalent. The first coat shall be thinned 30-50%, the second coat thinned 10%, and all remaining coats shall be applied full strength. Exterior brightwork shall include the, console dash, cockpit coaming, seat trim, toe rails and king plank on the fore deck.
