Outboard-powered Power Proa’s are possible and in fact run quite well. There is no glitch or down side, they run smooth, steer well, and operate seamlessly. Fuel economy is on par with the diesel design at the same cruising speeds. Noise levels are reduced, the engines are very quiet, and additionally are far from the helmsman and behind the transom. Running with a 70hp and 200hp combined is a nice balance for our Power Proa. The engines run perfect. They both are rated for the same RPM range (5,000-6,000), have the same lower unit gear ratio, and the same pitch props. The motors deliver thrust proportional to their Hp at the same Rpm. Our port hull, being 35% thinner, takes about 50% less energy to slip through the water. The starboard hull now without the keel form and prop pocket combined with the hull shape at the bow lets the boat run in balance. No helm correction is needed, and hands-free tracking is on par with our inboard design. Some might ask: “Why not make both hulls equal beam averaging the width?” I’d answer: Because having one hull Larger, as we have done, gives you roomy step-down access into the larger hull for accommodations. Aspen’s patented Proa hull design also provides superb fuel efficiencies and rides far better in a beam sea than a symmetrical catamaran. 

What this design doesn’t do:
Lower build cost. Some view outboards as the cheaper option, but in fact to build the outboard modules / swim platform and install all the components, the net build cost is the same.

What’s this do for Aspen Buyers?
Over the years there have been buyers who like what we do; the efficiency, stability, the cabin space and style but had one of these three issues: 

  1. They have to cut across a sand bar at their inlet to access the ocean, our 31” draft was too much.
  2. They travel to areas where there’s no service or travel far offshore while sport fishing , felt twin engines were better.
  3. Just Love Outboard engines, they grew up with them, they understand them. 

Now Aspen has an option for these three groups, a radically efficient design that meets their needs. Those buyers that love diesels and an open swim platform still have that option as well.

PATENTS PENDING:
The new design and the details to make it work have never been done before. Aspen’s legal team has begun patent work posthaste.

  • 70hp engine gauge set is limited to rpm/hrs
  • On-water service is harder to find
  • Alternator output reduced 14-25amp
  • Styling – some like / some don’t…
