The 16.98 is an upgraded version of the 15.98, sporting the same award winning hull but now with the addition of a tender garage, bow sprit, sleeker deck profile, and completely refreshed interior and systems from the structure on up. Italia 16.98...perfection in long distance cruising. With the design of the Italia 16.98, the tradition of the great ocean going fast cruiser is reborn and updated with the latest hydrodynamics using VPP Velocity Prediction Program. "True Bluewater" best describes Italia 16.98. Conceived to cruise long distances by combining performance, comfort and timeless style with the guarantee of safe arrival even under the harshest conditions. Italia 16.98 is the brainchild of Matteo Polli, Italia Yachts chief designer, in collaboration with the yacht designer Tommaso Spadolini. It is a complete, all-round boat with the performance you would expect from a fast cruising, seagoing boat behavior yet classic and original lines. The water lines: performance and comfort. Italia 16.98 is designed to let you live well on board while sailing. Development of the excellent hull was derived from her smaller sister ship, Italia 13.98, Italia 16.98 gains the internal hull volume and livability on deck without substantially increasing the wetted surface.The hull has flared sections with a raised transom and sharp deadrise at the bow. The shape allows for a variable waterline length, giving excellent low wind sailing abilities, but also stretching the waterline dynamically with increasing speed. This allows for outstanding performance in all sailing conditions. Much care was given to the aspects related to comfort at sea, with careful study on the longitudinal trim and symmetry of the hull shape while heeled as well as in the concentration of the center of gravity as much as possible to limit the tendency to pitch. In the design of Italia 16.98, we wanted to combine an Italian style and taste with the typical qualities and characteristics of blue water boats. Everything on board is thought of and conceived as a complete and prolonged life on board, both in open spaces as well as in the refined and spacious interiors. Tommaso Spadolini - Designer Construction quality. The hull and deck are made a composite sandwich with bi-axial and unidirectional glass fabrics impregnated with vinyl-ester resin, coupled with a CoreCell PVC foam. In the central part of the boat the structure consists of a grid of galvanized steel stringers and floors, to ensure a high resistance to concentrated loads. The structural frame is designed to constitute a closed structural ring, able to distribute in an optimal manner efforts on the hull and deck and to withstand the large loads from the keel, mast and rigging. This also allows for greater fuel and water tank-age, and for those tanks to be placed lower in the hull to lower the center of gravity. Unidirectional carbon fiber reinforcements are placed in high load areas longitudinal and transverse. The bow also has carbon fiber reinforced structural framing laminated directly to the hull. This allows for added support during slamming loads while sailing in severe weather conditions. Forward and aft watertight bulkheads separate the interior of the boat from points of impact. Keel and Rudder The Italia 16.98 is offered with various versions of the keel, in order to satisfy the different ways to use the boat. The standard version, for those who want maximum performance, provides a 9' 6" T-shaped bulb keel, with Weldox 700 steel blade and a lead torpedo. There an L-shaped keel option for shallow draft of 8' 6". The rudder has a standard high aspect ratio and it is 8' 2" deep. The steering system includes two pedestals with completely separate and independent circuits to improve safety during navigation. Sail Plan The standard version is provided with an aluminum boom and three spreader mast by John Mast, with discontinuous rod rigging and closed turnbuckles. Upon request, it is available as a carbon mast and boom solution. The jib furling drum is recessed below deck, and is manual with the ability to control with the halyard winch. All the running rigging is made with ropes made of Dyneema® cores Deck Concept The deck layout reminds one of a maxi super yacht. This allows the vessel to have wide areas free from equipment: a separate cockpit area, side decks and large areas for sunbathing. All the equipment is of the highest quality, starting from the over-sized winches for jib and mainsail trim. All winches can be electric powered. On the coach roof there are tracks for the jib sheets inclusive of travelers, and 14 clutches and relative deck organizers are installed on the deck plan. All pushpits and stanchions are made in stainless steel and side gates are installed on both sides of the boat. A Large Cockpit The large teak cockpit is divided into three areas. The front part is reserved for guests and completely free from equipment. The benches, 7' 6" long and 2' wide, also perfect for sunbathing, are served by a large table with folding wings, protected by a stowaway dodger, supplied as standard. Under the benches there are two deep lockers for equipment. In line with the wheels, the cockpit floor is lowered; the maneuvering area is concentrated close to the wheels, with enough space for the crew but with ergonomics that allows the helmsman to control the whole boat using the four winches. Behind the wheels a flat and clear surface can be fully allocated to sunbathing area, in direct connection with the sea. Under the cockpit floor there is a large storage compartment accessible by three lockers to store equipment and facilities, while on one side there is a life raft locker. Deck and Coach-roof Design The diamond shaped portlight design is further emphasized by the presence of different levels that give movement to the whole profile. The grid on the coaming provides a touch of exclusivity. The coach-roof is conceived to allow the storage of the sprayhood and of all the lines, which run recessed up to the winches. Coach-roof central area is perfect for sunbathing; on each side there are the jib tracks, with adjustments from the cockpit, which allow for optimal upwind angles. The numerous hatches are all flush deck. The sidewalks are free from equipment and allows the passage towards the bow safely and comfortably. The anchoring system provides a windlass for an anchor housed on a steel bow roller. The slightly angled bow benefits the anchoring operation. It can also be supplied with a bowsprit as well as a pivoting system that allows the whole anchor arm to be hidden in the bow locker. The through deck furler and foldable moorings cleats emphasize the tidiness of the whole area.
